The American NSF, institute for standards, and the BIFMA (association of office furniture manufacturers) have developed a standard with the BIFMA x5 certification that allows to harmonize the standards applicable to sustainability for the office furniture industry and identifies environmentally friendly manufacturers.

The standard authorizes different levels of performance in order to offer an alternative to proprietary or exclusive international protocols.
