The U.S. NSF, an institute for standards, and BIFMA (an association of office furniture manufacturers) have developed with the BIFMA x5 certification a standard to harmonize applicable sustainability standards for the office furniture industry and identify environmentally friendly manufacturers.

The standard authorizes different performance levels for the purpose of providing an alternative to proprietary or exclusive protocols.
